Departure for Altomonte, one of the most fascinating centres in the province of Cosenza, characterized by spectacular views, ancient monuments and impressive architecture: the Norman Castle, the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, the Dominican Convent and the Civic Museum and many majestic buildings. Then tou move to Civita, located in the Pollino National Park in a position that allows a breathtaking view: from the Raganello Gorge, with its Devil’s bridge, to the Plain of Sybaris. Its historical centre is rich in art, history, tradition where the dominant element is stone. Here, we find an Arbëresh linguistic minority of which the Arbëresh Ethnic Museum of Arbëresh Culture, the famous Kodra Houses, so called in memory of the Albanian artist IBRAHIM KODRA. Lunch in a local restaurant. in the afternoon, departure for Morano Calabro, also known as “Pollino Crib”, is a medieval village that acts as a panoramic balcony over the Coscile Valley. Breakfast. Departure for Rocca Imperiale, on the border with Basilicata, considered one of the most picturesque and suggestive villages in Italy. In the shape of a pyramid, with its splendid historical buildings, the houses arranged in steps, the former Franciscan monastery inside which today there is a Wax Museum, the wonderful churches, the Swabian Castle … until it overlooks the splendid Ionian Sea with its beautiful beaches. Lunch in a local restaurant. in the afternoon, visit Oriolo, perched on a spur about 500 meters high, preserves an intact beautiful medieval village, with beautiful facades of noble palaces, on the road leading to the Aragonese Castle and the beautiful Church of San Giorgio. Breakfast. Departure for Aieta, one of the smallest and most characteristic Calabrian villages. Its mountain landscape is rich in paths, the old town centre preserves indelible traces of its glorious past: the 16th century Palazzo Nobiliare, the Mother Church of S. Maria della Visitazione in the main square with its splendid frescoes, the remains of the Convent of S. Francesco d’Assisi at the gates of the village, the narrow and deep “Valle dei Mulini” and the artistic stone portals of its noble palaces. Then you move to Buonvicino, a small village that combines the richness of its naturalistic heritage with the extraordinary qualities of its religious, archaeological and agro-alimentary heritage. Charming alleys, enchanting valleys that form the backdrop to the sea, the square leading to the Museum of Taste dedicated to Ippolito Cavalcanti, the Monastery of San Ciriaco, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Nevi. Lunch in a local restaurant. Departure for Fiumefreddo Bruzio, built on a rocky promontory, is a marvel of landscape and culture, one of the most famous tourist destinations in Calabria. The village is a succession of ancient churches and historic buildings: Baron del Bianco’s palace, Palazzo Gaudiosi, Palazzo Zupi with its wonderful doorway, Palazzo Pignatelli and, above all, the ruins of the Castle, known as “Palazzo della Valle”, built on the upper part of the village, then the ancient Church of the Addolorata, the Church of Santa Domenica, the Chiesa Matrice di San Michele Arcangelo and the characteristic alleys. This strip of land, close to a slope rich in olive trees and vines, was the home of the philosopher Tommaso Campanella and a place of retreat for hermits and Basilian monks. Then you move to Gerace. Lunch in alocal restaurant. in the afternoon, visit Gerace, the “medieval town”, with its imposing Norman Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum, the ancient noble palaces and the Castle, the other important medieval churches; and still the place of the imprisonment of the Five Martyrs of Gerace and the splendid view of the Ionian Sea of the Bombards and the characteristic alleys that smell of history. With its characteristic alleys and its architecture is one of the richest Calabrian villages of art, history and culture. Countless are its cultural and artistic assets: the ruins of the Norman Castle, San Leo Church , Santa Maria Isodia’s Cathedral, Folklore and Folk Traditions Museum, Paleontology and Natural Sciences of Aspromonte Museum and the characteristic locomotive placed in Piazza Ferrovieri d’Italia that symbolizes, mainly, the Bovesi who left the village on the train: a sort of monument to the emigrant. From the famous “balcony of Bova”, a remarkable viewpoint, you can admire, instead, the whole coastal arch below. Lunch in a local restaurant. in the afternoon, you move to Scylla, the “little Venice of the Tyrrhenian Sea” and stands perched on the slopes of a rocky promontory. The characteristic small port that houses the now few spatare, particular boats for swordfishing, is dominated by the size of the castle of the early Middle Ages owned by the Ruffo di Calabria. Scilla is still famous for the ancient fishermen’s quarter of Chianalea with its charming narrow streets and canals, as well as for the fishermen’s houses sloping down to the sea.
